The Greatest Gift You Can Give
Tis’ the season of gift giving. I would be the first to admit that my strength is not gift giving. I tend to find it overwhelming trying to find the “perfect” gift. In the past, I have found that I will stress myself out so much trying to find the perfect gift and blowing off every idea I think of as not good enough. Recently, I have changed my idea of gift giving. I realized that it’s the thought that matters behind the gift. In our family we are doing more and more hand crafted and homemade gifts. These are my favorite. Truth is I don’t care about how much money a person spends, but the thought and care they put behind the gift speaks volumes. Some of my favorite gifts are hand crafted trinkets and paintings from my sons.
One of the best gifts you can give your family, and most importantly, your children, is a well thought out and executed estate plan. Making sure that they are taken care of no matter what happens and having the mechanisms in place that they are provided for well into the future. I have seen what happens to families when there is no plan in place, and it can be heartbreaking. It can be heartbreaking to explain to a widow that she has to go to court to access her deceased husband’s assets. It’s heartbreaking to see an 18 year blow through a large amount of money because there were no safeguards in place. It’s heartbreaking to hear about another plate sale to raise money for a widower and his young children just so they can make ends meet and have a few presents under the Christmas tree. And the reality is, many of these things can be planned for and avoided. We can set up a plan so you don’t have to go to court when your spouse passes away. There are safeguards we can put in place for young children and adults so that they spend inherited funds wisely. And for a lot of people, there are ways to make sure there are funds available for a family after a parent has died. These are some of the best gifts you can give your family. The gift if assurance and peace of mind that you thought about and planned for them.
